西汉置，属陇西郡。治所即今甘肃广河县西阿力麻土乡古城。

西晋初废。十六国前凉复置，初属晋兴郡，后为大夏郡治。北魏属金城郡。北周属枹罕郡。唐贞观元年(627)废入枹罕县，五年复置，属河州。广德后没于吐蕃。
