秦灭巴、蜀后，在四川省推行郡县制，在原巴蜀地区设置了巴郡和蜀郡。李世民贞观元年(公元627年)，废除州、郡制，改益州为剑南道，治所位于成都府。因位于剑门关镇以南，故名。
