同昌县位于四川平昌县江口镇，原名为平州县，宇文邕保定市四年（564），改名同昌县。

北周武帝保定四年（564），平州县改名同昌县（治今四川平昌县江口镇），属遂宁郡。隋开皇三年（583），属巴州。开皇九年（589）改同昌县名归仁县，仍属巴州。
